Iroquois Creation Myths and Christopher Columbus Letters The difference in writing styles between the Iroquois Creation Myth and Christopher Columbus’ letters is very significant. The Iroquois Creation Myth is much more mystical and entertaining while Columbus’ letters are more formal and simply recounting events. Though the two pieces of literature have their differences, there are still some similarities. The Iroquois Creation Myths focus on nature and animals. Likewise, when Christopher Columbus is writing his letters, he describes the nature around him in great detail. If Columbus did not discover the Native Americans, more people would probably know about them because around 8 million of them would not have died. Though Christopher Columbus praised the nature he â€Å"worked so hard to discover†, he failed to mention the people there for obvious reasons. In his second letter to the king and queen of Spain, our preconceptions about what kind of person he was is confirmed. He acted entitled and somewhat rude towards the royals. If that was how he treated his superiors that funded his trip, you can only imagine how he spoke to the natives. Our previous knowledge of Christopher Columbus definitely affects our interpretation of his letters. Maybe if we had no prior knowledge of his heinous acts towards the natives, we would view his letters more objectively. We tend to pity Native Americans due to the harsh treatment they received and it may cause us to have a bias towards their literature. Our understanding of the time period helps us understand both of the documents. For example, the Iroquois Creation Myth was sprea d by oral tradition for many years before being written down. This gap from when the story was originally told could have lent to changes being made to the story. We have to understand that and keep in mind that we are reading an approximate retelling. Ulysses in Hell The two epics The Odyssey, by Homer, and The Inferno, by Dante, both works have two different perspectives of the character Ulysses. The Odyssey is told from the ancient Greek perspective around 700BC, and The Inferno is told from a Christian point of view in 1300AD. Both epics are written nearly 2000 years apart from each other. What set apart the ideals of both epics are the Pagan warrior perspective in Homer’s epic and the Christian Europe perspective in Dante’s epic. Gangwars are especially dangerous, it starts with just two people, one from one gangand one from another gang. One of them does something to the other, like stabhim, and then the victims friends will get the attacker. It continues toescalate until it is all out war. Stopping gang wars is just one small step tostopping youth violence. Gangs are not the only youths who commit crime. There are tons of kidswho steal from stores, do and sell drugs, vandalize buildings and a lot of otherthings as well. These kids are just as large of a problem as the gang membersare. Some kids think that stealing a candy bar here, a pair of jeans there, istotally harmless. They think that they arent stealing that much, so it doesntreally matter. Or some kids think that they are beautifying the city bypainting on the sides of buildings. Both are wrong, what they are doing is acrime. They shouldnt be doing it, and have got to stop. A lot of kidscomplain that they have no freedom, or that there are to many rules andrestrictions at school or in society. The reason that there are so many rulesand restrictions is because of all the youth crime there is. If kids wouldlearn to stop stealing, doing drugs, being in gangs and all of the other crimesthey do, a lot of the rules and restrictions would be lifted and they would havemore freedom. At school, kids are not allowed to wear hats or bandannas. They cannotwear these because they are gang related. Many gangs have formed, most havetheir own special colors, almost like school colors. They were their gangcolors with pride as school kids wear their school colors with pride. When onegroup of kids from one gang, sees another group of kids from another gang,fighting can occur.
